Obywatelstwo polskie

Polish Citizenship: Naturalization in Wrocław

There are two main ways to obtain Polish citizenship: through recognition by the voivode (uznanie za obywatela polskiego) — based on clear statutory criteria for length of stay, or through a grant by the President of Poland (nadanie obywatelstwa) — with no formal conditions, at the head of state’s discretion. We work out which path fits your case and support you from filing through to the decision.

Two paths to citizenship

Recognition by the voivode or a grant by the President

All documents in a foreign language must be submitted with a sworn translation into Polish. Data is current as of the official sources gov.pl/web/mswia and prezydent.pl.

01

Recognition by the voivode (uznanie za obywatela polskiego)

+
  • 1 year of permanent residence — if obtained via Polish origin or Karta Polaka
  • 2 years of continuous residence on permanent residence/EU long-term resident status — with at least 3 years of marriage to a Polish citizen
  • 3 years of continuous residence on permanent residence/EU long-term resident status — with stable income and housing rights
  • 10 years of continuous residence — the general path for other cases, with stable income and housing
  • A certificate of Polish language proficiency at level B1 (official confirmation)
  • Stamp duty — 1000 zł, power-of-attorney fee (if you have a representative) — 17 zł
  • The decision is issued within 6 months (can be extended); it can be appealed to MSWiA
02

A grant by the President of Poland (nadanie obywatelstwa)

+
  • There are no formal conditions on length of stay — the decision is made at the President's discretion
  • In practice, factors considered include: length of residence in Poland, integration, language skills, family ties, and professional and community activity
  • The residence card and international passport must be valid for at least 6 months at the time of filing
  • Stamp duty — 1669 zł (current as of August 2025)
  • The President's decision cannot be appealed; review takes an average of 1 to 3 years
03

Required documents

+
  • International passport and a valid residence card
  • The official application form, filled out by hand in Polish
  • A current passport-format photo
  • Proof of grounds (residence cards for all years, marriage certificate, documents on origin, etc.)
  • Translations of foreign documents, performed by a sworn translator
  • Proof of stable income and housing rights (for recognition by the voivode)

Tightening of the minimum stay requirements is under discussion (a bill from the Polish Ministry of Interior), so we always verify the current conditions before a consultation.
